More than 400 arrested for drink driving over holiday season
/>Gardai have today revealed the extent of their Christmas safety campaign, including 413 arrests for people driving while intoxicated.
From December 1 to 19th, Gardairecorded the arrests while a total of six people have lost their lives on Irish roads in the last month.
A total of 26,500 people were breath test as part of the festive safety initiative, which is also targeting general road offences, including use of seatbelts, vehicle lighting, tyre condition, driving licences, insurance, NCT and road tax.
Assistant Commissioner John Twomey explained "it's just not worth" the risk when to drive under the influence.
"Last week we ran a highly publicised checkpoint on the M1, and amongst other offences detected, 1 person was arrested for intoxicated driving," he said.
"It is therefore totally unacceptable that a further 138 people made that decision to drink and drive last week, and were subsequently arrested.
"I want to send a very strong message to all drivers and remind them that members of An Garda Síochána are out in force all around the country, targeting this and other key life saver road offences. Never ever drink and drive.
"It's just not worth it," he concluded.
