Letter of Complaint

On the 13th of December 2012, I went up to Dublin from Westport with 7.15am train. I wish to report on the incident that occurred in the said train.  I had to get a staff member of the Irish Rails to accompany me to the toilet because the train was jam-packed.  The woman on the other side of me, who had an electric wheelchair also couldn't get to the toilet because of too many people on the hallway and a buggy right behind her.  On the other corner, a man, his wife and their two daughters blocked the space reserved for wheelchair users.  As though the above wasn't enough, a man was sat on my table from Athlone to Dublin.

On my way back from the above trip, another man used his baby buggy to block the space reserved for wheelchair users.

The above situation is not only bad but also despicable, as it does not demonstrate any respect for people with disability.  I suppose the above situation should be thoroughly investigated and be made to stop forthwith, as the space for people with disability should be left exclusively for them not to taken or occupied by able bodied persons.

Kind regards,

Dear thomas francis,

Protestors are camped out in the Rohanne Forest in France, determined to stop a new airport that would ruin the countryside. Support them by telling Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault to abandon the airport construction plan.

Building this airport makes no sense. Take some of the most basic considerations that go into the decision to build something new.

- Does it hurt the environment? This proposed airport would not only destroy the Rohanne Forest, but it would add air traffic and all the global warming-causing emissions that come with it.

- Does it make sense economically? The airport would cost an enormous 556 million euros. Can the government really justify that expense in a time of austerity, which is making it harder and harder to pay for the basic services people need?

- Do people want it? I think the protestors should answer that question with an emphatic NO.

Tell the French government you stand with the protestors and want the Rohanne forest more than an expensive, destructive airport.

Irish Election

We had good company

Posted: 27 Dec 2012 07:45 PM PST

The Irish Times has a nice set of articles on the papers released under the 30 year rule, which cover 1982 — quite a year in Irish politics. Among the points of interest is the strain in UK-Ireland relations caused by the Falklands War. Deaglán de Bréadún gets perhaps a tad ambitious though in seeking to make the position of the Haughey government on the war into an entry in what would be a short book entitled Good Things About Charlie Haughey. Now credit where it's due, Haughey's reported description of the evolution of Ireland's position is excellent: he was an intelligent man who understood a foreign policy brief as well as any foreign minister:

According to the newly released record of the meeting, he continued: "Argentina was certainly responsible for starting the conflict in the first instance but we feel that after that the matter should have been dealt with in the United Nations – the Security Council – and through negotiations." The issue had "caused us some difficulty" in Ireland, he said, adding: "The EEC/Ten had wished to impose sanctions. We were prepared to do so but only as long as they were in support of political and diplomatic action. "Once it became clear that the UK was not prepared to pursue this course but had switched to a military approach we felt we had no option but to withdraw from sanctions. "Our approach, therefore, is that Argentina was wrong in the first place and that it should withdraw. This would mean a general cessation of hostilities. "A solution should then be found through the United Nations, the UN secretary general and the Security Council," Haughey is reported as saying.

As he recognized, Mrs Thatcher was determined to pursue a military solution, and Ireland's reluctant position was causing major friction, with the radical idea being floated (privately) in the UK of withdrawing de facto citizenship rights for Irish citizens resident in the UK, which had existed since 1922. So, can it be as Deaglán de Bréadún says, "that it could be argued that, for all his well-publicised failings as a political leader, this was, in the Churchillian phrase, Charlie's finest hour?"

The big problem is that Ireland was not actually alone in its lack of enthusiasm for the way the Falklands conflict was headed. Among the peripheral Atlantic countries with ancestral links to the UK that were not too keen was … the United States of America! The Daily Telegraph has a good account of the deep divisions within the US government about how to handle it, with President Reagan's instinctive leaning to Maggie's position running into a significant view in Washington that their longer-term interests lay with keeping Argentina and Latin America more generally onside; the USA's western hemisphere roots were definitely showing. And as one reads through the full package of IT articles on the crisis, it becomes clear that there was a large group of unhappy countries looking to slow down the rush to war, including Italy and Spain. Certainly knowing in hindsight that GUBU was just months away puts a touch of class on Charlie's positioning on this issue. But overall it's a ledger still too deep in the red to be rescued by one stance that was well within the logic of Irish foreign policy.

Submission on proposed courthouse closures

Posted: 19 Dec 2012 10:39 AM PST

Mayo is the 3rd largest county in Ireland and it has a rising population.  The removal of the courthouses of Achill, Westport, Swinford and Ballyhaunis would leave huge areas of the county and the population without access to a local courthouse.
The local courthouse like the local pub, shop, post office, Garda station and bank is one of the cornerstones of rural Irish life and has been since the legal system was established in this country.
It is accepted that justice must be done and must seen to be done and that justice delayed is justice denied I would contend that justice must, like governance, must also be as local as possible.
Court is a distressing place to those unfamiliar with it.  They can also be intimidating places whether you are a defendant, plaintiff or a witness.
One of the main benefits of local courthouses such as Westport's is that the court takes place locally and an individual can rely on friends and family for support and does not have to add the stress and expense of travel and food onto an already overburdened individual.
Many people attending court must rely on public transport and its often illogical and inconvenient schedules to get to and from court.
When a crime is committed locally it is great to see that it is dealt with locally and that justice is not the prevue of some distant court but is actually executed locally.
If Achill court house is closed then local court users will have to make a 73km journey to Belmullet, which is the chosen alternative venue this is incredible unfair on a community who have already lost so much community infrastructure.
Courthouses are not just buildings; they are service centres, community features and symbols of justice, justice that is local and accessible.

STOP THE BULLYING IN SCHOOLS !

Icon-reposting

This cause just reposted this pledge

"Hi everyone. We need to come together around the community in Sandy Hook after last week's tragic shooting. Please take action with me and join in a moment of silence with this community on Friday. Now is the time to put aside our differences and show our support. Thank you." — Sydney Fleischer (cause supporter)

It starts with you

Please join in a national moment of silence in honor of the Sandy Hook victims called for by Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy. At 9:30 a.m. EST, spend several minutes reflecting quietly on this terrible tragedy and take a five minute pause from all online activity.

If you have a website or blog, please spread the word by placing this badge on your page and observing online silence in your own way.

In the coming weeks and months, we must come together around common-sense solutions that will prevent the gun violence that has become all too frequent in communities across the country. 2013 is the year to take meaningful action; observing this moment of silence on Friday, we can signal our resolve to stop senseless deaths like these from happening again.

Please use the Twitter hashtag #momentforSandyHook to let your friends know the importance of participating in this tribute to the Sandy Hook victims and committing to reduce future gun violence. Thank you.

Registered Letters to Prime Minister Kenny and Justice Minister Shatter

By William Finnerty

" 'Impunity' means the impossibility, de jure or de facto, of bringing the perpetrators of violations to account - whether in criminal, civil, administrative or disciplinary proceedings - since they are not subject to any inquiry that might lead to their being accused, arrested, tried and, if found guilty, sentenced to appropriate penalties, and to making reparations to their victims."  United Nations

Registered Letters to Prime Minister Kenny and Justice Minister Shatter
by W Finnerty Tue Dec 18, 2012 10:45

The Republic of Ireland Post Office Tracking Service indicates that two very similar registered letters sent last Friday (December 14th 2012) -- one to Prime Minister Enda Kenny TD, and the other to Justice Minister Alan Shatter TD -- were both successfully delivered yesterday (December 17th 2012).

Scanned "hard copies" of the Post Office delivery information can be viewed at the following www location:
http://humanrightsireland.com/PrimeMinisterEndaKennyTD/14December2012/Email.htm

As can be seen at the www address immediately above, the contents of the registered letters in question relate to what I see as extraordinarily worrying and completely unacceptable behaviour connected with the "inactivity" of Galway HSE (Health Service Executive) Hospital Consultant Dr Anne Jeffers, and Health Minister Dr James Reilly TD: throughout the whole of the past six months or so.

Through the use of the two registered letters of last Friday, my hope is that 1) Prime Minister Kenny TD might act in a manner which resolves the issues in question, and 2) that (at the same time) Minister for Justice Alan Shatter TD will give serious consideration to the legality -- in terms of national and international legislation based on the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights of 1948 -- of the manner in which HSE Hospital Consultant Dr Jeffers and Health Minister Dr Reilly appear to be doing absolutely nothing, that I know of, about any of the several seriously important difficulties in question.

As the issue of government support for impunity appears to me to be one of the main issues involved, and mindful of the manner in which Irish human rights lawyers Pat Finucane (http://tinyurl.com/cqzylps) and Rosemary Nelson (http://tinyurl.com/cvkw7n6) appear to have been both unlawfully KILLED in extremely violent ways -- with the knowledge and approval of senior public officials connected with the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britton and Northern Ireland apparently -- a separate related e-mail was sent yesterday (i.e. December 17th 2012) to Prime Minister Enda Kenny TD, and to Minister for Justice Alan Shatter TD, which contained the following excerpt:

"The unlawful state-sponsored murder of human-rights lawyers is an extremely powerful deterrent for all other would-be human rights lawyers; and, the criminals in governments know that: which is why they wish to be able to keep on committing such crime with impunity (using cover-ups of every kind imaginable)."

The full text of yesterday's e-mail, which was copied to an international selection of senior political, legal, and religious leaders, can be viewed at:
