Man arrested in connection with the death of a 28-year-old woman in Co Mayo

A man in his 20s has been arrested in connection with the death of 28-year-old woman near Mayo Abbey, Co Mayo.

The woman's body was found at a secluded bungalow located just outside the village of Balla off the N60 Claremorris to Castlebar road.

Gardaí were alerted to the discovery of the body after the ambulance service responded to a call early this afternoon and attended the scene.

It is understood the woman had been living in the area for around 15 years and had two children.

The woman moved to the county with her family as a teenager in the late 1990s.

Initial examinations are being conducted by forensic experts from the garda technical bureau.

The dead woman's remains are still at the scene.

Dr Michael Curtis from the State Pathologist's Office will conduct a preliminary examination of the body there tonight.

The body will then be removed to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar, where a full post-mortem will be conducted tomorrow.

The man in his early 20s is currently being detained at Castlebar Garda Station.
