The Donegal Centre for Independent Living (DCIL) has turned the sod on its new premises.

The development site is located at Ballymacool House in Letterkenny and has an expected completion date of June 2014. Michael Doherty & Sons Contractors will carry out the work.

These premises were bought a year ago and DCIL management and directors have been working relentlessly with architect Barry McCullagh ever since. The team needed to ensure plans were sufficient to house DCIL operations, administration and management while allowing for versatility and stability in the future.

Plans include a training / resource centre and meeting room which will serve current needs and potential service development. This service will be available to rent to other groups and organisations within the community.

DCIL has been providing essential support services for 14 years to people with disabilities who are striving to achieve independent living. They are supported in leading fulfilling lives through choice and control over their own lives.

A staff of 140 provides Personal Assistant Services to over 90 people with disabilities in the community. They assist in areas such as personal care, social activities, household tasks and support in a place of work or study. DCIL also operates a Community Employment Scheme, and an Accessible Transport Scheme to Service Users (Leaders). Disability Awareness Workshops have been provided over the last four years in primary and post-primary schools throughout the county.

General Manager of DCIL Rosaleen Bradley said: "We would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge those that have supported us in getting this far not least the National Lottery Fund, but also the Premises Sub Group which included James McLean, Donal K O'Boyle, Jennifer Doherty, Martin McIntyre, Frank Larkin who has shown great commitment to myself during the development of this project to-date.

"We welcome any support or fundraising efforts of the community in the completion of this project but for now we are delighted to have reached this milestone before the end of 2013."
