Puerto Pollensa is in the north of the island, overlooking the glass-flat Mediterranean. The entire town is almost flat, which makes it easy to walk around and to push a buggy or a wheelchair. As a small fishing village, Puerto Pollensa was historically praised by poets and immortalised by artists but it has successfully re-invented itself as one of the island's most popular tourist destinations. Most importantly Puerto Pollensa has kept it charm offering a relaxed way of life where tourists mingle with local people. Puerto Pollensa is friendly and perfect for families. Getting there could not be easier as there is a number of airlines to choose from and flights take just over two hours. Within fifty minutes of landing at Palma airport, you can be sitting by the sea in your shorts and flip flops, enjoying the theatre of a swarthy waiter pouring one of those huge G&Ts.

Puerto Pollensa Promenade    Puerto Pollensa Pinewalk
Puerto Pollensa Marina    Puerto Pollensa Pinewalk
On warm, balmy evenings everyone wanders up and down the pedestrianised sea front esplanade from the marina, past the pavement cafes and along the famous Pine Walk. It is always busy but never crowded. Outstanding sand sculptures decorate the beach at regular intervals. There is a café on every corner and a tempting array of clothes and gift shops. The harbour dominates the centre of the port and glass bottomed, sight-seeing boats share their berths with the Formentor ferries. A regular bus services from the harbour make the rest of the island easily accessible.

Puerto Pollensa Beach.....
Getting ready for the sea! - This buggy is free to use on Puerto Pollensa Beach    Easy to move across the sand - Find this buggy by the lifeguard office!
The beach in Puerto Pollensa is easily accessed from the promenade. As a bay, the sea is calm and perfect for people wanting a gentle swim. Sections of the beach have wooden walkways for wheelchair access. Life guards are on duty and beach buggies are available from the Red Cross Hut on the beach.

Puerto Pollensa Square.....
Puerto Pollensa Square    Puerto Pollensa Square
The main square, with its modern church and numerous bars and restaurants, is only a couple of hundred yards from the sea. It is the focal point for evening activities and is popular with locals and tourists alike. The most popular bar in the square is Bonys which is owned and run by José who cleverly tempts parents to his tables by throwing handfuls of sweets into the path of the kids. Bonys is a popular meeting place for young and old alike. The Cultural cafe is also very popular for a drink. It's cheap and very popular with the locals. If you are lucky enough to visit Puerto Pollensa during festival week, there is entertainment every night in the square, where local people gather to enjoy the festivities with the tourists. They are very proud of their town.

Puerto Pollensa Market Day......
Puerto Pollensa Square    Puerto Pollensa Square
The square is the location of the weekly market. One of the simple pleasures of life! The market takes place every Wednesday morning from around 10am until 12 noon. The square is closed to traffic and the roads are lined with stalls of all descriptions. Colourful rows of huge fruit and vegetables along with hand made crafts and local produce. Even if you do not intend to buy anything, there is something about a bona fide European market which is culturally attractive, particularly when accompanied by an 'authentic' band of Andalusian pan pipers.A short walk around the stalls for an hour sets you up for lunch and a refreshment in one of the many restaurants and bars.

Eating out in Puerto Pollensa.....
Restaurant Puerto Pollensa    Restaurant Puerto Pollensa
The choice of places to eat is enormous with a price tag for everyone. If you want to grab a real bargain check out the low price "menú del Dia" that is often available in Mallorquin cafe's and restaurants. Invented during Franco's rule as a nutritious, fixed price way for the workers of Spain to get a decent meal, the Menú del Dia is generally advertised outside the restaurant on a chalk board. The menú del dia is a three course meal, with wine and water included in the price. In general, cuisine ranges from the English style chippy or American Diner to Catalan classics. Highlights include Mallorquin specialities such as tumbet (rataouille with potatoes), lechona (roast suckling pig), seafood paella and rabbit stew with locally grown vegetables.

Pollensa Old Town.....
Pollensa Old Town    Pollensa Old Town
Pollensa old town is about 8km inland and a visit should be high on your agenda. It boasts a history that saw Egyptians, Romans, Moors and Ottomans all having a say in how the town developed and a day soaking up the history is time well spent. Or just enjoy browsing the many galleries and art shops. It is a haven of Mallorcan traditions one of which is the mock battle between the Moors and Christians where the expulsion of the Moors from island is celebrated which takes place in August.
