DISABILITY campaigners are waiting until they get confirmation of the coalition’s u-turn in writing before they call off their protest outside Government Buildings.
Some of the protestors stayed outside last night, even after the u-turn to €10m of cuts to personal assistants to people with disabilities.
Well-wishers continued to sound their car horns in support this morning, and others brought food and drink to them last night.
Martin Naughton of the Disability Federation of Ireland said this morning they were waiting for their letter from the Department of Health to be sent to them.
“It’s being couriered over at the moment,” Mr Naughton said. He expects it to be the same as last night’s statement, but added: “We have to see it in writing”.
“That was only in their interest,” he said. They will decide after reading the letter whether to call of the protest, but will then handover to others due to gather outside Leinster House to demonstrate against the cuts to home help packages.
That protest is due to begin at six o’clock this evening.
