Castlebar leads the way as a ‘Live Better Travel Smarter’ town
Wednesday 22 September last was No Car Day and people right accross Europe and left their car behind, using public transport, cycling or walking to get to work, college or school.
In Castlebar, the ‘Live Better, Travel Smarter’ event took place on the Mall to mark ‘No Car Day’ and was a resounding success with more than 100 school children taking part in fun cycles events on the Mall.
The Treasure Hunt proved a real success but the real highlight for everyone young and old was the Mass Fun Cycle around the town of Castlebar at lunchtime. This event was part of a week long number of events organised by Iompar Castlebar in the town to mark EU mobility week.
At the event, the winners of Castlebar’s Smartest Mover 2010 were announced and presented with their prizes. Congratulations to the winners who were all nominated on Castlebar.ie by the people of Castlebar:
Youth: Ronan Reilly, Ballynew, who cycles to school everyday rain, hail or snow.
Adult: Ger Minogue, who works in the HSE who walks to and from work.
Group: Karen/Burmese Community who all walk and cycle around the town of Castlebar all the time.
Thérèse Ruane, Chairperson of Iompar Castlebar would like to thank everyone who took part or helped out in organising all the events throughout the past week to celebrate EU Mobility Week in Castlebar:
“On behalf of Iompar Castlebar, we’d like to thank everyone for all their support. It has been a very successful week of events. Congratulations to all the winners in Castlebar’s Smartest Mover 2010 competition and well done to everyone who participated in the eight week Cycle Challenge.
“This year’s Live Better Travel Smarter event in the Mall was a really enjoyable day and we’re already planning for next year to make it even bigger and better for everyone.
“Everyone has a part to play in making Castlebar a smarter travel town. The benefits of leaving your car at home, of walking and cycling are obvious – less congestion, healthier and more pleasant environment for everyone,” Cllr Ruane, Deputy Mayor of Castlebar, added.
