Access Campaigner in Strasbourg

CHAMBERS JOINS IN STRASBOURG EU LOBBY

Newport: Local disability rights campaigner Tom Chambers recently took part in the Strasbourg Freedom Drive.

More than 300 disabled people and their Personal Assistants from over 20 European countries gathered in Strasbourg in September for the biennial event, which is organised by the European Network on Independent Living.

They met with members of the European Parliament to discuss key issues of the Independent Living Movement.

This was the fourth time that Mr Chambers had attended the event, which he said is an important opportunity to lobby and petition MEPs in order to fight for equal rights, opportunities, choices and responsibilities for disabled people all over the world.

Mr Chambers said the cutting of grants and the losing of home help were among the key issues discussed by the delegation. The Newport man was the only attendee from Co Mayo, while 26 others travelled from elsewhere in Ireland.
