BUSINESSMAN Harry Crosbie was feeling the loss of his late friend Gerry Ryan last night when he officially launched his brand new docklands hotel, The Gibson, with an invite-only bash.

The well-to-do owner of the Point Village development admits the tragic 2fm broadcaster was a great supporter of his ambitious plans for the North Wall-based 'city quarter' and says he is still mourning his sudden death, which happened last April.

"My dear friend Gerry Ryan would have been here. Myself and my wife Rita miss him very much," Harry told the Diary.

Gerry's partner of two years, South African born Melanie Verwoerd, was among those who made a brief appearance at the exclusive event.

Dressed in a purple and black outfit, the mum of two was keen to avoid the limelight, however, declining to pose for photographs.

Also dressed to impress in an eye-catching red dress and matching jacket was Xpose presenter Glenda Gilson, who was on hand to MC the evening and host the raffle.

Other well known names there included RTE's Liveline presenter Joe Duffy and his wife and Today FM DJ Ray Foley.

Entertainment at the VIP bash was provided by up and coming rock band Fight Like Apes and DJ Mo Kelly, while guests tucked into a variety of oriental food including noodle boxes, sushi and a selection of desserts.

And while U2 tour manager Paul McGuinness and the four band members of U2 could not be in attendance due to tour commitments, Harry explained how he was delighted to receive a text from his good friend Bono to wish him well on his new venture.

The well-to-do businessman was among those who jetted to Rome in Italy last week to attend the band's much-awaited 360 tour and says the U2 singer ensured they had a trip to remember
