RTE’s Ryan Tubridy has been grabbing headlines this weekend with the news that he may have split from his former Rose of Tralee girlfriend. Here’s five things you may not know about the broadcaster.

The tabloids have been quoting ‘sources’ close to Ryan Turbridy and his girlfriend Aoibhinn Ni Shuilleabhain and the news isn’t good – it looks like Aoibhinn may have dumped him. Anyway, we thought this was as good an excuse as any to give you the background on a man who has become one of the country’s most well-known faces.

Tubridy started early

Tubridy started in broadcasting at the tender age of 12. His first gig involved reviewing books for the Radio 2 show Poporama presented by Ruth Buchanan. It earned him a whopping £25 per appearance.

Tubridy is writing a book

Ryan, who studied Arts in UCD, is working on a book about John F Kennedy's visit to Ireland in 1963. It is set to be published by Harper Collins.

Tubridy comes from political stock

Ryan is the nephew of former MEP Niall Andrews and former government minister David Andrews. He is the grandson of TD Seán Tubridy, the cousin of Fianna Fáil TDs Barry Andrews and Chris Andrews and was himself a member of gra Fianna Fáil.

The BBC wanted Tubridy

Back in July 2010, Tubridy's agent Noel Kelly confirmed that Tubridy had been offered a position by the BBC. The Beeb wanted him to present a summer filler for Jonathan Ross's BBC Radio 2 programme. However, Ryan declined the offer, saying he already had his hands full with Gerry Ryan’s slot and his job on the Late, Late Show.

Tubser is a tad sensitive

Ryan was the subject of a hilarious tirade of abuse from Hell’s Kitchen chef Gordon Ramsey when he appeared as a guest on the Late, Late. Turbidy quizzed Ramsey about whether he’d had plastic surgery and Ramsey responded, “Talking about plastic surgery, have you seen your ears lately?" He continued, “Look at those things, you must take off coming down the stairs. I'm surprised you can get through the door."

A stunned Tubridy whined, "It's a genetic thing," the stunned broadcaster replied. "I can't help it, I was born with it." He later spoke about the incident on the Ray D’Arcy’s show, saying, “I thought he (Ramsey) was a bit, em, British for my liking. I won’t be buying (his) books
