Cowen admits he hates 'Biffo' nickname
Taoiseach Brian Cowen has admitted that he doesn’t like the ‘Biffo’ nickname by which he is popularly known, which stands for Big Ignorant Fella from Offaly.
The beleaguered Taoiseach admitted that he has never liked the nickname and feels that there is no need for it.
“There is sometimes, unfortunately, a portrayal of the whole Biffo thing. I don’t like it to be honest and I don’t think there is any need for it. We should not portray any of our community like that,” Cowen said in an interview on Shannonside Radio on Friday.
“I do come from middle Ireland, but middle Ireland is a state of mind as much about as about geography. I think that people are far more discerning than they are given credit for by elements of the commentators.
“Sometimes those who portray a particular view that you are talking about themselves suffer a degree of parochialism that you would never find down the country,” added the Taoiseach.
Cowen was also quizzed about his feelings about the bad publicity he has received in recent weeks for a shambolic interview given on Morning Ireland last month following a late night drinking session at the Fianna Fáil think-in in Galway.
Cowen admitted to being affected by the controversy, but that he and his family have learned to cope with it.
“We never allow these things to upset us because if you do, people like that win and they just keep it up,” he said.
“You have got to say to people, look, isolate it for what it is, don’t give it any significance, ignore it, make sure it does not hurt you and does not worry you, get on with it.
“I think my children and my wife, certainly in most cases, have been able to deal with it that way. There was maybe a couple of cases where they took it another way, but I say, look, unfortunately that’s the way life is
