Minutes from previous meeting were checked and agreed

DISCUSSION:
BK welcomed all in attendance and invited them provide an update on their experience of NRH thus far:

  • STAFF - general comments from patients present were that Nursing standards were excellent and also the HCAs.  Patients who had returned to the NRH observed that there had been a lot of changes over the years, and much improvement in availability of therapies, etc. and expertise.
ACTION: comments to be fed back to relevant departments (AD)

  • TOILETS: patients identified difficulty involved in maneuvering wheelchair and transfer to toilet due to bin being beside the bowl – it proved easier to return to the ward toilet.
Also Electronic bin around to the right from Day Room does not open.
ACTION: to be forwarded to Hygiene Officer for review (AD)

  • Concerns:  One patient was concerned as he had to go to Beaumont Hospital for a procedure that he may loose his bed as this happened to him in the past.
AD explained that normally when patients transfer to other hospital's their bed is protected if they are expected to return/in this incidence it may have been due to an emergency admission.

  • information prior to admission:   One patient expressed frustration at anticipated length of stay as she had been given an indication prior to admission that duration would be two weeks but her therapy hasn't started yet and she has been here two weeks.  Patient queried if initial assessment could be quicker.  Also, patient wasn't aware that she would be in a mixed ward and is not happy about it.  Patients commented on information provided prior to admission/that patients were not always made aware of the fact that wards are mixed.  Some of the male patients commented that they did not think this appropriate as they felt a lot of female patients would prefer a female ward.  Patients who had been here in the past queried why  layout of beds in OLW had changed as it was divided up - one end female and the other male.
ACTION: to feedback to Programme/Nursing  – AD

  • Set down spot: patient queried if a canopy could be provided over one/two parking spaces in front car park near the Ambulance and designated as set down for wheelchair patients as the time taken to transfer from vehicle to chair (10 minutes) could mean getting soaked during bad weather.  Also, queried were the two hospital vans parked in this area – could they be moved to enable set down for patients.
  • SIGNAGE:  could signs be posted on walls directing patients to Sports hall?
ACTION: to be fed back to TSD/Communications Manager – AD

  • Improvements: The refurbishment on Our Lady's Ward was appreciated by patients but the close proximity of beds means that "it is not wheelchair friendly".  There is no space to bring wheelchair in beside beds – if one bed was taken out it would provide some space.
AD explained that the recent refurbishment was to bring the relevant wards/bathrooms in line with current standards only and that removing beds to provide space is not an option as hospital is funded/staffed for a certain bed complement and this would have a knock-on effect on budget.  AD also indicated that in the new hospital plans space issues would be addressed as the ward areas will be single rooms.
Patients also commented on the lack of space in the exercise room as there is so much equipment.

  • Rostering arrangements: Patients queried if it was necessary to get absolutely everything done (cleaning etc) before Doctors do their rounds on a Wednesday/could this be done on another day other than Wednesday? Patients' observations were that staff are under too much pressure as a result.  The issue of personal belongings being emptied out onto the beds while lockers are being cleaned is seen as an invasion of patients' privacy.
ACTION: to be fed back to Nursing/Hygiene Officer – AD.

  • ANNOUNCEMENTS:  Patients asked if the Patient Forum meeting could be announced on the tannoy to remind patients on the day/could Annie in the Day Room have a microphone to announce it?
ACTION: AD to request announcement of Patient Forum on tannoy for future       meetings.
updates:

  • WIFI - AD confirmed that the WIFI project is in progress and will be rolled-out over the next couple of months which should result in improved access to internet, etc.

  • POSITIVE FEEDBACK was given by all patients with regard to staff in ward areas, therapies, etc.

All patients present were thanked for their attendance and advised that there would be a meeting at the same time next month.

Next Meeting: Wednesday 7th November 2012.
