Thank you for signing up for updates on the National Disability Rights Demonstration on Wednesday 21st November.
This mailing list will only be used for updates on the protest march on the 21st November.
As you will have seen from the website, this march is aimed at people with disabilities and their families. The organisations involved in the Disability Rights Coalition are only involved in facilitating the protest, and are mostly concerned with organising the logistics of the event.
The aims of the protest are two-fold:
· Firstly, from a campaigning point of view, to raise awareness of the effect of cuts on people with a disability and their families over the last number of years, and to push the Government to implement the promises contained in the Programme for Government. A list of those promises is available at http://www.inclusionireland.ie/sites/default/files/documents/programme_for_government_promises.pdf;
· Also, to give people with a disability and their families an opportunity to show solidarity and unity;
We hope to get as many people on the streets as possible.
We ask that people please do not bring banners or placards highlighting issues associated with a service or organization. None of the organizations that are part of the Disability Rights Coalition will bring placards with their organization names on it. In this way, we believe it will be more focused on the individuals taking part. We instead ask people to bring placards with statements like 'Ennis says better education supports'. We also ask for any placards or banners to be red, and for participants to wear red, as this will send a strong visual message.
Anyone who brings placards or banners with organizations names on them, or with political party messages, will be asked to take them down.
I have the following requests to make of people who signed up to this list:
· If you are involved in an organization directly representing Self-Advocates, or families, and want to be mentioned on the website as a supporting organization, please mail me stating this;
· The media will be contacting us leading up to the event and afterwards looking for 'case studies', i.e. people who have been affected by cuts in some way and want to illustrate how this has affected them. If you are interested in speaking with the media, please let me know;
· We have a facebook and twitter account, please follow us and like us, and share our pages to get momentum going. Also, We have a cover picture on our facebook page with the march details, and it would be great if people could start using this as their own cover to create awareness;
· Finally, music often works well on protest marches. If you are involved in some form of a band that can provide music during the march (drums are particularly effective!) please let us know;
If you have any questions, please let us know.
Kind regards,
Siobhán Kane
