Subject: Ireland: Hospitable or heartless?

Dear friends across Ireland,

During her long, painful miscarriage, Savita begged doctors for an abortion. They said no, and she died a few days later in hospital. Ireland's top court allowed abortions where the mother's life is at risk, but politicians have failed to pass clear laws. Let's put Enda Kenny in the spotlight to save women's lives:

It makes you think differently about Ireland when you hear that a woman passed away in agony because doctors refused to give her an abortion when she and her baby were dying. But it's not just the doctors we need to tackle -- it's our politicians who're too scared of the church to update Ireland's laws!

The Irish Supreme Court said 20 years ago that if a mother is at risk, an abortion should be allowed. But that didn't save Savita. Ireland's lily livered politicians have failed to bring in the laws needed to ensure all health professionals have legal clarity and stop needless deaths. What will it take? Nothing less than a laser-focused campaign to challenge head of government, Enda Kenny, personally, to enact the law we need.

Labour say they're keen to do the right thing, but Fine Gael is blocking. If thousands of us, from across Ireland and India, join in, we can restore Ireland's pride. Let's all now call on Enda Kenny to introduce a new law in Savita's memory -- sign the petition now, then send this email to everyone!

In 1992 Ireland's Supreme Court ruled that abortions would be allowed when there was a "real and substantial risk to the life, as distinct from the health, of the mother". Despite this, Irish politicians are content to bury their heads in the sand and avoid legislating. Savita is a casualty of that cowardice, as are the 4,000 Irish women who travel abroad every year for abortions.

Anti-abortion activists say that Ireland's laws are adequate but in fact doctors don't know whether and when to act in a risky situation. Intervene too early and suffer criminal prosecution and intervene too late and end up killing the mother, like Savita. A government report on Ireland's abortion law has just been tabled and the Deputy Prime Minister Eamon Gilmore has said already that we need "legal clarity".

If thousands of us from across Ireland and India join Catholic leaders and India's government to push for a change in the law, we can get this done! Once 50,000 of us, have signed, we will advertise in Enda Kenny's Mayo constituency and ask other party leaders for their support:

When a rape victim in Afghanistan courageously spoke out, pressure from the international community and Avaaz members ensured one of her rapists got 16 years in jail. Together we are forcing governments from the US to Afghanistan to respect human rights.

With hope and determination,
