Neknominations: be your own person and not another's fool
Those tempted to participate in the new 'neknomination' fad should "be your own person and not be somebody else's fool." I will bring the matter up in the Seanad this week and seek a government response to the latest dangerous craze.
Neknominations is a new craze which started in Australia where people nominate others to down copious amounts of alcohol within a 24 hour period and post a video to various social media sites. Once this is done then you nominate others to do the same to keep the chain going. The online fad also encourages creativity in the videos.
This crazy trend is promoting a dangerous drinking culture with those participating trying to find new ways to outperform the next person with bizarre behaviour for social media popularity.
Increasing 'Youtube hits and Facebook likes seems to be the aim of it all which goes against all the evidence-based data out there which indicates that this kind of behaviour has got to stop.
The reality is if people drink on a licensed premises and are intoxicated when they leave, there can be some offences there but in a private dwelling the concerns are purely health related.
The reality is it is extremely dangerous to consume large amounts of alcohol in such a small space of time. All advice out there indicates that downing a pint of vodka has the potential to kill you – especially if you are not used to drinking in such high volumes.
It is important that people should not get caught up in fads like this and if you are tempted to take part I would urge you to consider that in life you must be your own person and not be somebody else's fool.
