CASTLEBAR BASED DISABILITY CAMPAIGNER CALLS FOR MORE ACTION ON ACCESSIBLE PLAYGROUND
A Castlebar-based campaigner on the issue of disability has expressed concern that a playground in the new town park won't have full facilities for children with disabilities.
That's despite the fact that more than 600 people have signed a petition of support.
Veronica Neeley has lobbied intensively on the issue – and recommended the inclusion in the playground of a number of amenities which could be used by all children, including those with disabilities.
Despite securing wide support from members of Castlebar Town Council, and a petition with 650 signatures, Veronica says her proposals have been rejected by the local authority.
The issue was raised by Cllr Harry Barrett at this month's meeting of the local council.
In response, officials ruled out the possibility of providing the proposed equipment. They restated their view that the playground design, as it stands, meets acceptable standards.
Veronica Neeley told Midwest News she doesn't believe it's the cost of the equipment that the council is concerned about. She believes that the council did not consult widely enough before drawing up the playground plans.
