Subject: Volunteers to Train as Mentors

Greater Dublin Independent Living is now seeking Volunteers to Train as Mentors.

Mentor Training Course

GDIL is now seeking volunteers to train as mentors. Volunteers will follow a training course consisting of six three hour workshops. The course will cover communication skills, social housing in Ireland, rented accommodation, entitlements for people living with a disability and Independent Living issues. Course participants will receive a Certificate of Participation upon completion of the course. Trained mentors will then be matched up with a person seeking support. Support is provided throughout the mentoring process in addition to an allowance to cover expenses.

The aim of the mentoring service is to link people with disabilities who are successfully living inde-pendently with other people with disabilities who need help, advice and support. Trained mentors will share, on a one to one basis, their knowledge, expertise and experience of independent living.

What Do You Need to Become a Mentor?

Be living with a disability and have some experience of Independent Living and a keen interest in helping others move towards Independent Living. The training course will equip you with the skills to mentor and you will enjoy on-going support provided by GDIL throughout the mentoring process. In addition, you will receive a small allowance to cover any expenses you will incurred while mentoring. An ability to maintain confidentiality is very important.

When a Mentor is Trained.

When a Mentor is trained s/he is matched up with someone who is seeking support. Mentoring is a focused process where a person has a goal they want to achieve. Some people are about to leave the family home or residential care, another person might want to plan their first bus trip unaccompanied or, some-body might be struggling with their PA service. Going on holidays; looking for a house; adapting a home; learning to drive are also areas people where people seek support.
