Subject: Important Freedom Driver update for September the 13th - The Irish MEP Meeting

Hello Folks,

This is an important update, you need to be at the entrance to the Parliament Building one hour in advance of your meeting time to allow for security and access. (It's takes awhile to get in)

The hour is to facilitate:

Passport Check

Collection of Group by MEP Assistant from the entrance

Security (similar to the process at the airport)

Access – there are a limited number of lifts and it is a large building

That morning we will be at the ENIL conference at the Centre Culturel Marcel Marceau and it's quite far away from the Parliament building – you will need an hour to get to the parliament building and then another hour to actually get past security and be escorted into the meeting room.  ( the room will be open at 15:00 and our meeting with the Irish MEPs is scheduled for 15:30 sharp there's tea and coffee organised) We recommend you leave the Centre Culturel Marcel Marceau at 12:30 in order to get to the Irish MEP meeting in time.

Good morning people –

We are on the home stretch now –

Last night I spent 20 minutes trying to find my passport – and then another  10 minutes

Tearing the house asunder looking for an adapter – so I can charge my phone over there.

I guess I'm saying don't forget your charger – and remember to bring your passport with you

The morning of the MEP meeting or you won't get into the EU parliament building.

I don't mean to nag – I know I already said this – but you will have to leave the meeting early on Tuesday morning

Because it's so far from the EU Parliament building  - and you will need at least one hour to get through the security

At the EU parliament building. Gary and I will be there so just say hello and we will make a convoy plan that morning.

Dig out your tricolours your whistles and if you have an Irish hat or t-shirt maybe consider bringing that too.

It would make us stand out in the crowd as being Irish and look good on the photos.

I am doing my best to get confirmations from the media – but so far so good – I'll update you when I see you.

Is mise le meas

Good Evening Thomas,
Thank you for your reply, but I have checked your reservation and yes you have indeed indicated you needed an accessale room
I just want to let you know you were allocated room 106 which is an enabled access room,we have three in total, 106, 206, and 304 all these rooms have the same facility in them, with the door handles being lower, sinks, and the wheel in ramp on all the shower area's, and the safety bars for the toilet itself, all the bathroom doors in all 3 of these rooms close back the way tight to the wall of the actual bedroom to enable wheelchair mobility, however you forwarded me only the photo of the shower from the bedroom the other 2 photos were of the public toilet area. I must point out that these facilities have been checked and passed by Failte Ireland, we do have regular visits to make sure everything is kept well. I am sorry you feel our facility has been a let to yourself.

Your reply to me was far from satisfactory. What you tried to do was tell me about the accessible rooms you have.
As I had booked and requested an accessible room why did I not get one as I had paid for and enjoy my birthday as I will remember my stay in Gallaghers hotel for the wrong reason.

Glad everything is fine with the boy. January will be fine I hope as my health has not been great for some time now. I was in Dublin on the 21st September last and this van driver jumped the lights and sent me flying and kept going. I was taken to the Mater Hospital and kept in overnight. I requested x-rays to my back because I had extreme pain but nothing was found. They detected that my heart was racing mad but about 1 o clock the next day panic struck because the nurse was giving me the wrong tablets. I was discharged at about p.m. and I went home by train very sore. After a few days I was admitted to Mayo General and after x-rays every day they found a bone broke at the top of my spine and sent home then. Since then I have had bad kidney infections and ulcers all over me and waiting to get into some hospital.

I will keep you posted. I also missed the All Ireland Football Final.

Tom

Fw: Ireland: Hospitable or heartless?

Sent: Sunday, November 25, 2012 6:06 AM
Subject: Ireland: Hospitable or heartless?

Dear friends across Ireland,

During her long, painful miscarriage, Savita begged doctors for an abortion. They said no, and she died a few days later in hospital. Ireland's top court allowed abortions where the mother's life is at risk, but politicians have failed to pass clear laws. Let's put Enda Kenny in the spotlight to save women's lives:

Sign the petition
It makes you think differently about Ireland when you hear that a woman passed away in agony because doctors refused to give her an abortion when she and her baby were dying. But it's not just the doctors we need to tackle -- it's our politicians who're too scared of the church to update Ireland's laws!

The Irish Supreme Court said 20 years ago that if a mother is at risk, an abortion should be allowed. But that didn't save Savita. Ireland's lily livered politicians have failed to bring in the laws needed to ensure all health professionals have legal clarity and stop needless deaths. What will it take? Nothing less than a laser-focused campaign to challenge head of government, Enda Kenny, personally, to enact the law we need.

Labour say they're keen to do the right thing, but Fine Gael is blocking. If thousands of us, from across Ireland and India, join in, we can restore Ireland's pride. Let's all now call on Enda Kenny to introduce a new law in Savita's memory -- sign the petition now, then send this email to everyone!

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/petition/Ireland_Hospitable_or_heartless/?bzzUCbb&v=19512

In 1992 Ireland's Supreme Court ruled that abortions would be allowed when there was a "real and substantial risk to the life, as distinct from the health, of the mother". Despite this, Irish politicians are content to bury their heads in the sand and avoid legislating. Savita is a casualty of that cowardice, as are the 4,000 Irish women who travel abroad every year for abortions.

Anti-abortion activists say that Ireland's laws are adequate but in fact doctors don't know whether and when to act in a risky situation. Intervene too early and suffer criminal prosecution and intervene too late and end up killing the mother, like Savita. A government report on Ireland's abortion law has just been tabled and the Deputy Prime Minister Eamon Gilmore has said already that we need "legal clarity".

If thousands of us from across Ireland and India join Catholic leaders and India's government to push for a change in the law, we can get this done! Once 50,000 of us, have signed, we will advertise in Enda Kenny's Mayo constituency and ask other party leaders for their support:

https://secure.avaaz.org/en/petition/Ireland_Hospitable_or_heartless/?bzzUCbb&v=19512

When a rape victim in Afghanistan courageously spoke out, pressure from the international community and Avaaz members ensured one of her rapists got 16 years in jail. Together we are forcing governments from the US to Afghanistan to respect human rights.

With hope and determination,

Alex, Alaphia, Mary, Rewan, Caroline, Pedro, Ricken and the rest of the Avaaz team

Hogan's abolition plans could be scuppered under the constitution

Posted: 22 Nov 2012 07:02 PM PST

Phil Hogan's plans to abolish Town Councils could be derailed by the 20th amendment to the Constitution, which put local government on a constitutional footing in 2001.

That's according to Labour's Cllr Keith Martin who says that a legal challenge is a distinct possibility as town councillors across the country network to discuss moves to avert the proposed abolition of their councils.

"We are looking at all angles of both political pressure and legal action in relation to fighting the abolition of town councils.  A legal challenge based on the constitutionality of the proposal to abolition an entire layer of local government is one of the measures being discussed."

The 20th amendment enshrines local government into the constitution and ensures that the state recognises role of local government in providing a forum for the democratic representation of local communities, in exercising and performing at local level powers and functions conferred by law and in promoting by its initiatives the interests of such communities.

"We believe that this amendment created an expectation, beyond reasonable doubt, that Irish citizens would, under the constitution, have a vote every 5 years to elect members to their town councils to perform the range of functions also enshrined in the constitution.  This would mean that it would be impossible for Phil Hogan to abolish town councils without the support of a referendum."

Cllr Martin says he will be attending a Labour Party policy meeting in Galway on Monday where he will raise the issue with his party.  This follows on from a similar meeting in Munster where the regions councillors called on the party to reverse the abolitions.

A lot not done, a lot still to do

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 04:52 PM PST

Micheál Martin as Minister for Health & Children, in the Dail on 25 October 2001 to push through the legislation for the 25th Amendment to the Constitution –

The purpose of the Twenty-fifth Amendment of the Constitution (Protection of Human Life in Pregnancy) Bill is to provide a secure and effective constitutional basis for a legislative approach to the protection of human life in pregnancy. The proposals are designed to ensure that women can continue to receive all necessary medical treatment during pregnancy, while at the same time ensuring maximum protection of the unborn and maintaining a clear prohibition on abortion.

The mechanism proposed is that a referendum will be held to approve the insertion into Article 46 of the Constitution of the text of proposed amendments to Article 40.3 of the Constitution. These are (i) a new subsection 4º in Article 40.3 to provide that the life of the unborn in the womb will be protected in accordance with the Protection of Human Life in Pregnancy Act, 2002; and (ii) a new subsection 5º in Article 40.3 to provide that any future proposal to amend or repeal the Protection of Human Life in Pregnancy Act, 2002 will have to be approved by the people in a referendum … The new law will, therefore, define "abortion" in a way that clearly excludes such ethically legitimate procedures from being termed an abortion for the purposes of our criminal law. Doctors may provide any medical treatment which, in their opinion, is necessary to safeguard the life of a pregnant woman. The doctor's opinion must be formed in good faith and there is an explicit requirement that regard be had to the need to preserve unborn human life, where practicable. It is important to emphasise that doctors, when treating a pregnant woman, make every effort to safeguard not only her life, but that of her baby. This will not change after the passage of the Act.

Questions for the current leader of Fianna Fail given the context of the Savita Halappanavar case: do you still believe that legislation to cover what doctors can do in the case of life-threatening pregnancies needs to be embedded in the Constitution, and do you believe that the formula you outlined in 2001 for guiding such treatment is still relevant?
